Barcats works closely with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to provide pathways and training for Mature Aged job seekers looking to re-enter the industry.
We caught up with Andrea, a stay at home mum from September 2007 who recently completed our program and landed a job through us 14 years later!
How did you feel before vs after completing the DESE Mature aged program when approaching workplaces?
Nervous on the first day being a full-time mum and being rejected over and over again with applications and interviews, By the second or third day when we started with the RSA, RSG and more practical skills, my confidence was boosted and I enjoyed it so much.
Did your confidence improve after taking the course and working with the mentors during the program?
Yes, I was unsuccessful landing a job for ages prior to taking on the DESE course, the practice interviews were so beneficial and by my fifth interview post the completion of the course, I landed a job and have currently been in the role for 1 year and 1 month.
What kind of problems or challenges did you face prior to taking the DESE course?
Prior to taking the course I had no confidence to be able to work in the industry, no skills or qualifications, and I found that younger and more experienced people always got the job over me
How have these challenges been solved?
I have been in my role over a year now and loving it, I make coffees, serve tables and even help out in the kitchen from time to time. I have even managed to land a permanent part time contract, which is what I always wanted.
Would you recommend this to your friends and family?
Yes definitely if they were looking to land a job in hospitality, this is the perfect course to do so! Thank you so much to Barcats, Comron and Marco for all the help and support.
