How to get your RSA and RCG/RSG?
Sep 05, 2023
So, you've decided to dive headfirst into the exciting world of hospitality and entertainment? That's fantastic news! But before you start pouring drinks like a seasoned mixologist or dealing cards like a suave James Bond, there are a couple of certificates you need to snag: the RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) and RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gambling) or RSG (Responsible Service of Gaming) certificates.
If you're going to work at a licensed premises (a place that sells alcohol), you must complete competency training in the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). If you don't have valid evidence that you've completed the RSA training required for working in a licensed premises, you could be fined.
Unfortunately, Australia doesn’t have nationwide policies, so you need to make sure your RSA and RCG are correct for the state in which you’re working in. But don’t worry, we’ve got a full rundown for each state to make sure you don’t miss anything!
NSW
There are several RSA and RCG training providers across NSW, with both online and in-person courses available.
- See here for Service NSW's list of approved RSA training providers.
- See here for Service NSW's list of approved RCG training providers.
Once you've completed the training, you'll need to apply for an RSA or RCG competency card if you don't already have one.
Once you’ve got this you’re all ready to launch into hospo! See here for hospitality jobs available in NSW now!
VIC
- You need to complete the nationally accredited Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB021) course with a registered RTO approved by LCV.
Training may be in-person or online. See here for a list of RSA RTOs that have been approved by the Victorian Government.
When you complete the course you will be given a RSA Certificate of Completion. Provide a copy of your certificate to your employer.
- Victorian gaming venue staff must complete approved Responsible Service of Gaming (RSG) training. Luckily you don’t need this certification before you start your job, but you do need to quickly complete the training once you’ve started. RSG certifications are also provided free of charge by the Victorian Government
You must complete two modules:
- Module 1 involves 2-3 hours of learning online and must be completed within one month of starting work in a gaming venue. You can complete the module before starting work if you choose.
- Module 2 is delivered via video-conferencing or in gaming venues within six months of starting work in a gaming venue. We recommend that you complete this module after you’ve started your employment.
See here for more details from the Victorian Government on how to make your RSG account (this is where you will complete your training).
QLD
- You will need a Statement of Attainment after completing the Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol course which can only be delivered by an RTO. See here for the list of RTOs.
The current course code is SITHFAB021. Also, you don't receive a card after gaining your Statement of Attainment like other states. - The required certification in Queensland is a Statement of Attainment, issued on completion of the national training package competency Provide Responsible Gambling Services.
As a competency within a national training package, the Provide Responsible Gambling Services course may only be delivered by an RTO. See here for a list of RTOs.
Once obtained, the RSG certification does not expire.
